The Washington Regency Society was pleased to be a part of Janefest this past November. Janefest was the brain child of Sarah Faulkner, a University of Washington doctoral candidate and was held on November 4, 2017 at Mary Gates Hall on the UW campus. WRS was offered the opportunity to have an educational display, teach participants to play Regency card games, and help put on a Fashion Show at this event.
The booth we had at Janefest was very popular. We had information on our organization, on Regency fashion and fabrics, as well as articles of clothing for participants to try on. Many people enjoyed trying on our sample bonnets and caps, and we were able to have some wonderful and informative discussions as well.
We also had a table where we could instruct participants in how to play Whist and Pope Joan, two popular card games of the period.
Dr. Sandra Mottner of WRS along with Kimberly Milhan of SITU, worked together to produce a quality Fashion Show of Regency fashions. Our members modeled fashions from throughout a typical day as well as showing activities that were done as well. From a morning outfit to a stunning evening gown, as well as a Riding Habit, and more, we enjoyed sharing our Regency garb.
Finally, WRS was happy to participate in the Grand Ball which was held in the evening. This was called by veteran caller, Charlene Kern of Seattle’s English Country Dance group. As many of us have had dance experience or are members of this group, we were happy to guide more novice dancers.
Overall, Janefest was a great outreach event for us. We met so many new and enthusiastic people that we hope to see at future events.
