Happy New Year from the Washington Regency Society Board Members!

    Auld Lang Syne

Who hasn’t sung this famous song when the clock strikes midnight?  Did you know the song became popular for New Year’s celebrations in the Regency?

After a long tradition of being sung during the Scottish celebration of Hogamany on New Year’s Eve, the Scottish poet, Robert Burns, collected and wrote down the lyrics in 1788 and it was first published in 1796. It quickly spread to much of the English-speaking world and is now sung at the stroke of midnight instead of when the guests leave the party.

    PLANNING AHEAD FOR 2026
Board members of the Washington Regency Society will be meeting in late January to discuss and plan the events for the remainder of 2026.

Do you have an idea? A venue? A question? Contact WRS President Ruth Haring at presidentRuth@waregency.org.

Looking forward to seeing you in the future at an WRS Event!
